Strengths-Based Development

We promote and enhance knowledge, understanding and the application of strengths-based development and leadership across the University of Nebraska–Lincoln system.

  • Provide enhanced strengths coach training, educational presentations, workshops, and one-on-one strengths coaching
  • Offer Strengths-based courses for students to develop their strengths for "Great Jobs and Great Lives"
  • Study the experiences that contribute to career and well-being outcomes
  • Manage shorter term controlled studies on various strengths interventions and student UCARE research projects

Strengths Terms

Strengths-based development: Talents -- thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that come naturally to you -- are the source of your true potential. The better you can apply these talents, the greater your potential to consistently act with more confident, direction, and hope.

Talent: a naturally recurring pattern of thought, feeling or behavior that can be productively applied. Thoughts, behaviors and feelings that come naturally to you -- are the source of your true potential. The better you can apply these talents, the greater your potential to consistently act with more confidence, direction, and hope.

Talent Themes: A category of talents. Themes help you begin to discover and talk about your greatest talents. Decades of research into talents and success have shown that the talents most related to potential for success can be grouped into 34 themes.

Strengths: the ability to consistently produce a positive outcome through near-perfect performance in a specific task, To finish with strength, start with talent.

Strengths Formula: Talent X Investment (refine knowledge, practice skills) = Strengths

  • Skill: the basic ability to move through the fundamental steps of a task. Skill can be acquired through formal or informal training
  • Knowledge: what you know -- knowledge can be acquired through formal or informal education
  • Practice: the time spent working, exercising and applying your skills, knowledge and talent to achieve proficiency

Strengths-based teams: a group of imperfect but talented contributors who are valued for their strengths and who need one another to realize individual and team excellence

Clifton StrengthsFinder Assessment: Gallup's groundbreaking on-line assessment helps people discover their unique combination of strengths. Today, the assessment has helped more than 14 million people worldwide discover, understand, and maximize their innate talents.

Gallup Purdue Index : From interviews with more than 30,000 graduates the Gallup-Purdue Index measures the degree to which graduates have "great jobs," through successful and engaging careers, and if they are leading "great lives," by thriving in their overall well-being. Through this research, BIG 6 significant college experiences emerged as experiences that influence higher levels of career engagement and life well-being:

  • Graduates who were "Emotionally supported" during college have more than double the odds of being engaged in their work and nearly 3x as likely to be thriving in their well-being.

Positive Psychology: A framework, or paradigm, that encompasses an approach to psychology from the perspective of healthy, successful life functioning. Topics include optimism, positive emotions, spirituality, happiness, satisfaction, personal development, and well-being.
