Fall 2008

Classroom 143 and 25 Renovations

Room 143

CBA 143 and 25 have been renovated by UNL Facilities to give the rooms a fresh new look. Both rooms have been repainted, have new carpet, and the student seating has all been reupholstered.

Both rooms will feature brand new technology installed by the UNL Instructional Technology Group. The rooms have been upgraded to a dual projector system, allowing two different PowerPoint presentations to be displayed at the same time. Other new features include a DVD/VHS combo unit, new wireless microphone system, and a new AMX touchpanel control system.

Stop by on Thursday, August 21 at 10:00 AM in CBA 143 for a short demonstration by Bede Bolin of the new technology, followed by an open house until noon. This is an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the new equipment before the fall semester starts.

Live@edu Update

Live@eduNew and current students can now sign up for their Live@edu account. Simply visit http://huskers.unl.edu to request your account.

Signing up for Bigred email accounts has been discontinued, but current Bigred users can continue to use the Bigred system until February 2009. Bigred can be set to forward all new mail to your new @huskers.unl.edu address, and future tools will be available to migrate all of your old email and folders to the new system.

BSAD 101 Enhancements

Room 143

BSAD 101 is a class for all incoming freshman CBA students. During the fall semesters, the class is so large, it occupies Room 143 and Room 104 (shown left) simultaneously. Part of the renovation in Room 143 includes an improved method to transmit the speaker presenting in Room 143 into Room 104. Audio and video lines have been installed across the hallway, and a new LCD HDTV screen has been installed in 104. This will allow the students in 104 to see the PowerPoint being shown in 143 on the projector, as well as see and hear the speaker via the LCD HDTV.

Coe Center Printing Upgrade

New Dell printers are being installed in the Coe Center to improve student printing. The two printers will share the load being placed on the current single Kyocera printer. This will not only double printing speed, but will add redundancy as well. If one printer fails, the other will take over the full load until it is repaired, making the printing service much more reliable.

Additionally, students can now load money onto their Uniprint accounts themselves by visiting http://uniprint.unl.edu and clicking "Add Funds". UNL has discontinued the Ncard swipe option that we previously offered at the ITS Help Desk in favor of the new web-based solution.

Summer 2008

Microsoft Exchange Labs Coming For UNL Students

The University of Nebraska will be migrating student email accounts this summer to a new Microsoft hosted environment. The new system will utilize Microsoft Exchange Labs and will retain much of the look and feel of the typical Microsoft environment. Some benefits include being able to access email from appropriate mobile devices, utilization of Microsoft Instant Messenger, and the ability to use collaborative tools online that will allow you to share documents and other projects.

The new email domain for UNL students will be @huskers.unl.edu. You will be able to retain this address even after you leave the university. Bigred email accounts will be discontinued although the university will attempt to transfer data to your new account. For those students using other types of email accounts such as Gmail you will be able to forward your email from the university system to your current account.

The email service will be hosted by Microsoft allowing students instantaneous access to updates and improvements made by Microsoft to its Live@edu services. Additionally, no advertising will be associated with your account as long as you remain a UNL student.

Stay tuned for futher updates and alerts regarding this exciting transition in UNL's student email services.

Spring 2008

Computer-based Testing Center

Testing Center Located on the lower level in Room 35, the College Testing Center is dedicated to providing examinees the opportunity to test fairly and under conditions conducive to achievement. The primary purpose of the Testing Center is to provide computer-based classroom testing for the College in a proctored secured environment. The Center would also provide testing support for distance students.

Classroom tests would usually be administered in the classroom during the normal course of a semester. The Testing Center allows instructors to administer their tests in the Testing Center instead of the classroom. This provides the following advantages:

  • Tests can be written to take 2 or 3 hours. Tests administered during class time are usually limited to one hour.
  • Tests can be available to the students for a longer period of time. This provides greater flexibility to the students allowing them to take the test at more convenient times.
  • Initially, the Center will be configured with 18 computers. The Spring 2008 Semester will be a pilot phase for the Center and your input will be very important.

For more information or Testing Center hours, contact the CBA Instructional Technology Manager at 472-5246 or the CBA Technical Services Manager at 472-0690.

Computer Classroom 33 Upgrade

Room 33Computer Classroom 33/38 now includes new small form computers, three systems to a table instead of two and improved cable management solutions. Based on instructors needs, the total number of classroom computers was increased from 18 to 27 to provide greater capacity and individual access. Overall seating capacity will remain at 36.

As a new service to the classroom, Classroom Management Software (CMS) was also installed to provide classroom control and flexibility. SMART Technologies SynchronEyes was selected. As a pioneering application in this area, SynchronEyes classroom management software connects a teacher’s computer with every computer in a networked classroom. SynchronEyes software is easy to use and offers a variety of features that enable you to keep students focused on learning and redirect their attention if they go of track. You can communicate, monitor or collaborate with students individually or as a group, so everyone gets the most out of class time.
