The University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration and University of Nebraska College of Law host the inaugural Lewis E. Harris Lecture Series featuring John Mackey on Wednesday, October 5, 1:30-2:30 p.m., at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. Mackey is co-founder and co-CEO of Whole Foods Market, his supermarket chain became the first in the United States certified as an organic grocer. He authored the book “Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business,” which appeared on best-selling lists for both the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

It All Depends on Context: A Replication and Extension of Beckman, Haunschild, and Phillips (2004),” delves into the effect of firm-specific uncertainty and market uncertainty on cooperative partnerships between companies using data taken from the largest 300 firms listed by Fortune in 1990.

His crowning achievement, however, may have come when the senior management and communications studies major found out he earned one of the most prestigious honors available to a college student – a Fulbright award to teach English in Vietnam.

Matt Foley, a junior economics and management major, started a company with three partners that was recently named a Top-10 Finalist in the international Thought for Food Challenge. The Lincoln-native and his team of two other University of Nebraska–Lincoln students and a faculty advisor from the Biosystems Engineering Department submitted their online marketplace called FarmAfield into the competition. Over 500 entries from over 100 countries were submitted aimed at finding creative ways to face the global challenge of feeding the world.

They will also visit two local universities – Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS). Rob Simon, associate professor of practice in marketing, is one of the faculty advisors for the trip.

Dr. Fred Luthans, University and George Holmes Distinguished Professor of Management, is retiring this semester after 48 years of service at the College of Business Administration – nearly half the age the college itself has been in existence at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.  His tenure at CBA is highlighted by some of the most prominent accomplishments in the history of the university, including writing the first textbook in the field of organizational behavior and founding the area of study known as psychological capital.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business Administration jumped 21 spots to No. 51 in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings of undergraduate business programs. There were 429 schools listed in the latest rankings based on an assessment survey conducted in the spring of 2014.
