The big move that started more than a year ago is finally a reality for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. UNL is part of the Big Ten Conference and along with that comes new opportunities for the College of Business Administration.

James, Jr. and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean Donde Plowman said, “Being part of the Big Ten has significant academic implications for the College of Business Administration. The Big Ten schools are among the finest in the nation and joining these colleges sets a high standard of excellence that will benefit the university, our students and the state of Nebraska.”
 

The SIFE chapter at UNL is looking to continue its entrepreneurial efforts at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. A new grant application through True Hero, Inc. looks to further their work installing garden kits for Pine Ridge residents.

Encouraging news is on the horizon for accountancy students. U.S. News and World Report recently listed the profession as one of the top 50 careers that should have strong growth over the next decade.

Dr. Jim Gentry, professor of marketing at UNL, received the Best Reviewer of the Year award for the Journal of Public Policy and Marketing at the 2011 AMA Marketing and Public Policy Conference. 

James Bonner came to Nebraska's biggest university from the small town of Battle Creek. Despite some apprehensions of life at a big school, Bonner graduated from CBA with new skills that have already helped him get one small business up and running.

Dr. Seth Giertz, assistant professor of economics at UNL, recently co-authored an article appearing in the current issue of the Journal of Labor Reserach.  Giertz and co-author Jeffrey Kubik explored the dynamics of Americans applying for disability as an 'early-retirement' option.

The UNL Marketing Department will once again help host the Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking. Dr. Dwayne Ball sees the opportunity for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to continue to be at the forefront of combating one of the world's most troubling problems.

UNL Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) captured the award of room champions at the regional competition this year where they showcased their entrepreneurial achievements.  The team presentation focused on how SIFE has helped citizens of Nebraska and members of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

For the past 12 summers Dr. Dwayne Ball has visited Portugal's New University of Lisbon to teach and research database marketing and customer relationship management.  The annual journey has enhanced Ball's development and given him new perspectives to pass along to students and colleagues back home.

The UNL College of Business Administration congratulates the nearly 500 students who received bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees following the Spring 2011 semester. Commencement ceremonies were conducted May 6 and 7 at the University.

The UNL Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda recently sent 35 members to the state leadership conference in Kearney, NE.  UNL participants achieved 80 competitive awards at the event.

Matt Adamson came to UNL to get his MBA degree but wasn't sure of its value compared to an undergrad degree.  Upon graduating in May, Adamson has a new appreciation for what UNL's MBA program really has to offer.

The inaugural Faculty Awards Reception for the College of Business Administration held, Thursday, April 28 at the Visitor’s Center. Dr. Donde Plowman, the James, Jr. and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean of CBA, honored six retiring faculty members and presented 10 faculty awards.

Economics and German major Alyx Dodds Garner developed an interest in the German language while living in Germany as a child.  Now she will be traveling back to Germany this summer as a Fulbright Scholar.

Business administration major Alex Bieber will graduate from CBA this spring and begin a pilot training program four days later proving business degrees offer a wide range of opportunities for students.

The UNL UCARE (Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experience) program is a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to learn how to conduct their own research.  Kin-ian Yin is just one of the college of business students who participated in the program this year.

Taylor Pugh has been awarded the 2011 FSA (Federation of Schools of Accountancy) Student Award. The award is voted on by graduate faculty and is given annually to one graduate student from each FSA member school.

UNL College of Business Administration students were recently recognized at the 2011 Honors Convocation.  Students were presented awards for academic achievement, which included the William Gold Scholarship Keys, the Clifford Hicks Honor Keys, the LeRossignol Scholar Awards and the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Keys.

UNL's Dr. Scott Fuess recently appeared on UNO Television's "Consider This..." to discuss the economic impact of Japanese's devastating earthquake.  Fuess, who has lived in Japan, has studied the Japanese economy closely for the past 15 years.

Julie Brechtel and Casey Hauptman are just two of the 90 College of Business Administration student athletes being honored for their academic success at UNL.  The two seniors conclude their Husker athletic careers this semester with great success on the playing field as well.

Business leaders from Nebraska were honored recently at the UNL College of Business Administration Advisory Board Annual Awards Luncheon.  Award recipients included Duane Acklie, JoAnn Martin, Joe Petsick, and Tenaska of Omaha.

Former CBA undergraduate and MBA grad Matt Senske followed his aspirations to work in the world of professional sports.  Through doing what he loves to do, Senske has found a home at Werner Park -- the new home of the Omaha Storm Chasers baseball franchise.

The UNL College of Business Administration has maintained its business and accounting accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. AACSB International is the longest serving global accrediting body for business schools.

The appeal Mark Suleiman found for business at CBA not only led him to change career paths but also inspired a real world business endeavor called the Shark Fund that helped other UNL students learn the fundamentals of financial investment.

The Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management gives UNL students a unique opportunity to create innovative technology in a hands-on environment.  The Raikes School's Design Studio program is currently featured in UNL's Focused on the Future campaign.

A report by Dr. Eric Thompson of UNL's Bureau of Business Research shows the significant impact that the insurance industry has on Nebraska's economy.  The research, conducted by Thompson and Creighton University's Dr. Ernie Goss, concludes that insurance businesses had an overall impact of $10.3 billion on the state's economy last year.

CBA marketing students, Jamie Dick and Alex Earll traveled to Atlanta, GA to compete in the 13th Annual National Collegiate Sales Competition (NCSC).  Accompanied by faculty coach, Dr. Scott Friend, the students were given a hypothetical sales case and were given 20 minutes to present their product to buyers outlined in the case.

UNL economics professor Dr. Carlos Asarta went to Japan to lecture on economic education. He ended up helping document one of the world's worst natural catastrophes in modern times.

The International Association for Feminist Economics, headquartered in the Departments of Economics and Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska– Lincoln, will receive a $250,000 grant over the next two years from the Ford Foundation to support publication of a special issue of Feminist Economics, the Association’s signature journal, on “Land, Gender, and Food Security.”

Alka and Suresh Subramanian took principles they learned at the UNL College of Business and applied them to helping other people. Their efforts through the Power of Love Foundation now help provide healing and relief to people battling HIV/AIDS and malaria a half a world away.

Economics professor Dr. Ann Mari-May has received news that a major new three-volume research collection that she co-authored will be published as part of the International Library of Critical Writings in Economics Series.
