UNL College of Business Administration students Samantha Areman and Brendon Henning were named the 2014 National Research Corporation (NRC) Rising Stars Scholarship recipients. The annual scholarship rewards students with an interest in business development, marketing and entrepreneurship. Each recipient received $2,000 to be applied toward their tuition and fees during the spring 2015 semester.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln does not recycle glass but that did not stop students in Management 311: Leadership, Communications and Teams from making it the focus of their class project this semester. The group, which went by the name “Kicking Glass,” collected 59 pounds of clear glass, 44 pounds of brown glass and 12 pounds of green and blue glass over three days at the end of November in the Nebraska Union.

Nebraska’s Leading Economic Indicator fell slightly, by 0.10 percent in October, marking the second consecutive monthly decline.

“The decline in the Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska is primarily the result of a sharp increase in the value of the U.S. dollar during October,” said University of Nebraska-Lincoln economist Eric Thompson, director of the Bureau of Business Research. “A rising dollar puts pressure on exporters in agriculture and manufacturing.”

“The decline in the Leading Economic Indicator suggests weaker growth for the Nebraska economy during the first quarter of 2015,” said University of Nebraska-Lincoln economist Eric Thompson, director of the Bureau of Business Research. “The Nebraska economy is growing solidly at the moment, but economic momentum will slow around the turn of the year.”

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business Administration jumped 21 spots to No. 51 in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings of undergraduate business programs. There were 429 schools listed in the latest rankings based on an assessment survey conducted in the spring of 2014. U.S. News surveyed deans and senior faculty at each undergraduate business program accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and asked them to rate the overall quality of the undergraduate business program at each university.

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) fell by 0.75% in July, 2014, its first drop in six months. “Results suggest that the rate of economic growth in Nebraska may slow in early 2015 after strong growth in the second half of 2014,” said University of Nebraska-Lincoln economist Eric Thompson, director of the Bureau of Business Research. “It will be critical to monitor leading indicator values over the next few months to see if this trend continues.”

Husker coaches and University of Nebraska-Lincoln administrators and deans will travel across the state on the Big Red Express whistle-stop tour on Union Pacific Railroad’s historic train cars on Saturday, June 28. The tour, reminiscent of popular political tactics used in the 19th century, begins in Omaha at 6 a.m. and includes stops in Columbus (10:05 a.m.), Grand Island (11:55 a.m.), Kearney (1:50 p.m.) and North Platte (4:50 p.m.) before returning to Omaha. Each whistle stop will include short speeches, a proclamation presented to each city and Husker coaches and university administrators mingling with the crowd.

Students at the University of NebraskaLincoln College of Business Administration in the ECON 445 Economics, Gender and Social Provisioning class presented ideas for making a positive impact in the world during finals week. Their assignment was to deliver a five minute presentation, similar to a TED Talk, a national series of presentations given under the broad umbrella of “ideas worth spreading,” on a subject related to the class. The result was a diverse series of presentations ranging from turning used pizza boxes into firewood to helping increase the minimum wage in Bangladesh.
