The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Parents Association and Teaching Council recognized 25 Nebraska Business faculty and staff during their annual award ceremony on Friday, February 2. The Parents' Recognition Award is presented to those who made a significant difference in students' lives.

The Parents Association solicits nominations through an annual mailing, asking parents to nominate a faculty or staff member. Nominations include a short explanation of why this person was nominated.

“The nomination process for these awards is a unique two-step process. Students share the meaningful experiences they have with our faculty and staff with their parents and then it’s the parents who do the nominating. It means our faculty and staff impacted not only a student, but a family, in a positive way,” said Dr. Kathy Farrell, James Jr. and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean of the College of Business.

Janessa Hageman, assistant director of the Business Career Center, received the award for the first time. She hopes the impact she has on students helps them find success in college and life.

“Awards like this provide affirmation that you are making a difference in students’ lives. I want to be able to make an impact on students and help them reach their career goals. Being recognized showcases that I’m doing the right thing,” said Hageman. “My hope is to prepare students for a successful career in life after college.”

Dr. Joel Owens, assistant professor of accountancy, received the award for the second year in a row. He believes teaching is where faculty can have the most immediate impact.

“This is one of the most important awards I’ve been given, so to receive it again feels great. I want students to have fun in my classes because I have a ton of fun doing it. If they see how fun it is, they are going to enjoy what they do and continue learning for the rest of their lives,” he said.
