Connecting to Wireless

Wireless network access is available at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The service is free to students, with a monthly fee assessed for employee use.

To gain access on UNL's wireless network, users must have a wireless network card for their mobile device. Most devices have a wireless card built in, but users with older devices may have to purchase an external wireless card. Any 802.11b/g/n built in or external wireless card will be compatible with the wireless network on the entire UNL campus. To gain access, users are required to register the physical address of their wireless card with UNL.

Instructions
  1. Find and record the physical address of your wireless network card.
    • Windows (XP and newer)
      1. Click on Start, then Run.
      2. Type "cmd" in the box and press Enter (leave the quotation marks out).
      3. In the box that appears, type "ipconfig /all" and press Enter (leave the quotation marks out).
      4. Find the Wireless Network Connection heading and look for the Physical Address of your wireless card. It should be 12 characters long, displayed similar to 00-0B-8D-33-98-D4.
    • Mac (OS X 10.5 and newer)
      1. Click on the Apple Menu in the upper left corner.
      2. Click on System Preferences.
      3. Click on Network.
      4. Click on AirPort in the left hand column of connection options.
      5. Click the Advanced button.
      6. Find the AirPort ID at the bottom of the window. It should be 12 characters long, displayed similar to 00-0B-8D-33-98-D4.
    • Apple iPhone, iPod, and iPad
      1. Press the Settings icon.
      2. Press on General.
      3. Press on About.
      4. Scroll down and look for Wi-Fi Address. It should be 12 characters long, displayed similar to 00-0B-8D-33-98-D4.
  2. On a computer with an active network connection, go to wireless-reg.unl.edu.
    1. Log in with your Blackboard username and password.
    2. Click on "Register a card."
    3. Type in the physical address of your wireless card. You can enter the address with or without separators, and the letters can be in upper or lower case. Click "Next" when you are finished.
    4. Verify you entered the address correctly and click "Next" again. You will receive confirmation that your card has been registered and will be able to access the network within 10 minutes.
    5. Join wireless network called UNL-AIR.
Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client

Obtain Cisco's AnyConnect VPN (Virtual Private Network) client by visiting http://vpn.nebraska.edu and selecting the UNL-My.UNL login option from the group dropdown list. After logging in the application will automatically install the VPN client on your computer and place a VPN icon in your system tray. You can also launch the VPN from your applications folder or Start menu.
