Just-In-Time (JIT) purchasing has received an increasing amount of attention in the operations management literature. Today, a growing number of US firms have switched to the Japanese JIT purchasing concept in an effort to improve their product quality and productivity. This article discusses the major activities of JIT purchasing and provides a comparative analysis of differences between the JIT purchasing and traditional US purchasing systems. Furthermore, the reasons behind these major differences and their future implications for US firms are discussed
