The role of internal knowledge broker in diversification: Evidence from Korean conglomerates

This study focuses on the organizational structures which support learning based diversification strategy. Particularly, an internal knowledge brokerage institution is suggested as the proper form for this purpose. This institution can manage knowledge across diverse industries and units effectively. It can also contribute to the convergent innovation which can be a valuable resource of diversified companies. To investigate this issue, the managerial research institutions of seven major Korean business groups (Conglomerates) are investigated. Furthermore, the possibility that such knowledge institutions can be the sources of isomorphic social pressures based on their intellectual authorities and accumulated knowledge and that such social influences can support the further diversification of conglomerates will be discussed.
