Ji's parents supported her in her decision to broaden her horizons abroad and were able to come to Nebraska this spring for her graduation ceremony. Ji gained much of her real world experience by working in the CBA Communications and Marketing office.

Dean Donde Plowman created a new Dean's Presidents Council to enhance the sense of community among students. The council, made up of presidents from each CBA student organization, is intended to increase opportunities for students to become active in the college. CBA currently has 17 student organizations and each were represented at the kickoff luncheon held in January. The presidents and their faculty advisors met with Plowman and other administrators to begin envisioning and planning for this new organization.

Dr. Colleen Jones has seen more than 200 students participate in the Melvin W. Jones Scholars Learning Community since it began eight years ago. Under Jones’ leadership, the learning community was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from the Target Foundation, which donates 5 percent of its income weekly to schools and nonprofit organizations. The grant will provide student awards, scholarships and general program support.

Steven “Chuck” Bates ’97 learned a lot on the move. A military brat, his family lived in Watertown, S.D. until his father was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue. When he was 10, his family relocated to Belgium, where Bates graduated from high school at the NATO base. Then he moved back to Nebraska to attend the UNL College of Business Administration.

The UNL College of Business Administration Partnership Summit and Advisory Board Meetings will be held Friday, October 7. Dr. Donde Ashmos Plowman, James Jr. and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean, has invited the more than 150 members of these boards and special guests to hear her deliver the State of the College Address, “Our First Year in the Big Ten” at 11a.m. in Steinhart Room at the Lied Center.

The advisory boards for CBA include: the overall College of Business Administration Advisory Board, Actuarial Science Advisory Board, Bureau of Business Research Advisory Board, Finance Advisory Board, Marketing Department Advisory Board, NE Council on Economic Education Executive Committee and School of Accountancy Advisory Board. Three newly formed boards will also meet and include: the Center for Entrepreneurship Board, the MBA Advisory Board and the Young Professional Advisory Board.

Dr. Donde Plowman, James, Jr. and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean of the College of Business Administration, celebrated her first anniversary at UNL on July 1 – the same day UNL officially became a member of the Big Ten conference. The announcement to join the Big Ten happened between the time Plowman accepted the offer to join CBA and before she started her official first day. Since then, much of Plowman’s work has involved positioning the college to take full advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity. The combined energy of a new dean and moving to the Big Ten has been noticed by faculty and students alike.

To improve the UNL College of Business Administration’s core programs and attract the best students to Nebraska requires a creative marketing strategy that promotes the college’s strengths. Sheri Irwin-Gish was hired as CBA’s Executive Director of Communication and Marketing to do just that. Irwin-Gish’s main priority is developing and implementing a marketing plan for UNL in the Big Ten.

When Tonn '81 and Holly (Acklie) Ostergard '80 were asked to chair the UNL College of Business Administration Campaign for Nebraska, they immediately agreed due to their “collective affection” for CBA. Tonn is an accounting graduate and though Holly received her degree in elementary education, she took many courses in CBA.

The new Nebraska Center for Entrepreneurship Advisory Council met for the first time in late April with CBA Dean Donde Plowman. The Advisory Council’s mission is to provide strategic planning for the center and to better engage the Nebraska business community. The Council is currently working to facilitate new strategies as UNL enters the Big Ten and will work with the NEC’s new director to ensure growth in this vital component of the college.
